Photo of the Week: A sealer moves in to kill a seal pup

Photo of Week is a feature that highlights the work IFAW does around the world everyday to rescue orphaned, injured, or mistreated animals.

Seal_photo

On the frozen ice of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, a sealer moves in to kill a seal pup with a hakapik -- a spiked club. Canada allows the controversial hunting of seal pups and 95% of the seals killed are younger than 3 months old. The hunt takes place annually in the spring. Last year the Canadian government set a quota allowing up to 335,000 seals to be killed. The hunt will run this year through mid-April.

Once again, IFAW will be sending a team of observers to document and expose abuses of the hunt and press for an end to this cruel, unsustainable slaughter. To learn more, visit www.stopthesealhunt.com.
