we help nations develop common sense policies to reduce destructive ocean noise.
Ocean noise might not sound like the most urgent problem facing marine life, yet it can be destructive and in some cases, deadly.
High levels of noise from shipping, oil and gas exploration, naval sonar training and construction are drowning out the ocean’s natural sounds. This diminishes the ability for whales, dolphins and other marine life to communicate, feed, breed and survive.
Ocean noise and international commerce are connected. This is why we’ve worked to better understand the problem and set better standards. In Europe, national legislation and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive envision firm decibel limits on ocean noise emissions.
We’ve also worked with shipping companies and the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee to push progress further around the world.
We’ve found that in the Pacific Ocean, ship noise has doubled every decade over the last 40 years. As a result of increased ocean noise, blue whales’ ability to interact has been drastically reduced with the distance they can communicate decreasing by 90 percent.
