Josey Sharrad
Oceania
Josey has always had an affinity for animals because of their innocence and vulnerability. From a young age, she always felt she wanted to stand up for them and be their voice. Early in her career, she moved away from public relations in the corporate world to apply those same skills to something more meaningful in the activism space.
Josey began her career with IFAW in London nearly 20 years ago, working on a variety of issues ranging from protecting elephants from the ivory trade to rescuing penguins from oil spills. She was instrumental in the high profile campaign to ban fox hunting in the UK. In 2012, seeking a fresh challenge and more sunshine, she transferred to IFAW's Sydney office. She instantly fell in love with Australia’s unique wildlife and became determined to shine an international spotlight on its plight.
Now a wildlife campaigner, Josey actively champions IFAW’s holistic approach to rescue, rehabilitation and release into safe spaces of the country’s native wildlife. She and the team work closely with partners across the country, including state wildlife councils, Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, the USC Detection Dogs for Conservation program, Mosswood Wildlife, Friends of the Koala, and our wildlife corridor initiative with Bangalow Koalas.
