VIDEO: A personal account of animal disaster work in Malawi

Mar 11 2015

My name is Peter Howson and I am an aquaculture consultant from the UK. Since November 2014, I have been in Malawi working with IFAW on two animal welfare projects.

I was initially invited to contribute to the sustainability of the IFAW fish farm project based in Liwonde National Park. The project was established to deter poaching fish from the Shire River, whilst also providing local people with a more sustainable livelihood choice.

Watch: Chinese children recite “Lament of an Elephant Calf”

Mar 10 2015

There were many moving moments at the gala to launch IFAW’s campaign “Give Peace to Elephants, Say No to Ivory” last November in Beijing.

One emotional moment in particular that touched me, was the recital of a poem by 9-year old Chinese girls Peng Minghui and Miao Yixin, called “Lament of An Elephant Calf”.

Belgium Calls for EU Ban on Exporting Ivory

Marie Christine Marghem, Belgian Minister for Energy, the Environment and Sustainable Development has called for EU action to ban the export of ivory from all EU member states. The bold call comes as an auction house in France has suggested that buyers can circumvent the domestic ban on raw ivory exports by sending ivory to China through Belgium.

Dogs in sheep’s clothing

Feb 18 2015

The pickup truck is making its way over a bumpy meadow towards the sheep enclosure. Three large livestock guardian dogs - that look very much like sheep themselves – have already seen us and are watching us attentively from behind the fence. They know the vehicle and they know their shepherd, that’s why they are not raising the alarm. As we get out and walk towards the herd, they wag their tails and stay relaxed.
