Robert Kless

Robert Kless grew up in the south of Germany in a rural part of the Black Forest. The beauty of the landscape and nature awakened an enthusiasm for animals and conservation. That passion turned into a profession, propelling Robert into a career that has spanned decades.

While at university, Robert’s dedication towards conservation grew. For example, he campaigned for organic agriculture and took part in actions against the use of genetic engineering in food. Throughout his professional career, Robert worked for various environmental, conservation and animal welfare organizations. As a campaigner, he promoted the awareness of important conservation goals within Germany, including the restoration of rivers, the promotion of renewable energy, and ending commercial fur farming and the use of wild animals in circuses.

In 2005, Robert joined IFAW, working as a campaigner for wildlife trade issues. As he gained more experience, his scope and impact grew. Eventually, he became Country Director in Germany and then Regional Representative for Germany and Europe in 2024, acting as the point person for national and international partnerships and projects. He continues to be intensively involved both politically and actively in projects on the topics of wildlife trade and the protection and connection of ecologically important landscapes and habitats, especially for elephants, in close cooperation with local communities.
