Traditionally, the annual hunt off the coast of Newfoundland is closed until mid-April to allow mothers to give birth to their pups and nurse without disruption. The Canadian government has not announced the 2016 quota, but it will likely remain at 400,000 harp seals, 60,000 grey seals and 8,200 hooded seals. The trade ban had to be revised in response to findings of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
