The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), alongside GreaterGood.org and Wings of Rescue, has organized additional transportation for surviving animals of Hurricane Dorian, a category 5 storm which devastated the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama on September 1st. IFAW deployed within days to begin animal rescue operations. When the IFAW team first arrived onsite in the hardest hit areas of Abaco and Grand Bahamas, many of the animal survivors required emergency care and nutritional support. Now, many of those animals have been stabilized and are ready for their journey to a new home. With funding from the Andrew Sabin Family Foundation, the team arranged a flight to transport 54 of dogs and 96 cats from the areas hit hardest hit by Dorian.
On Friday, October 4th, shelter animals will be arriving at Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown, Delaware. The 54 dogs will be taken to Brandywine SPCA in Delaware where their health will be assessed and the process will begin to find them a forever home. Separately, the 96 cats will continue on to Maine where they will be taken to Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.
IFAW and its partners within the newly founded Dorian Animal Rescue Coalition have led international animal rescue efforts for this response by providing rapid assessment and life-saving rescue operations assistance, while also helping to ensure relief services were available and aid distributed to those in greatest need.
