IFAW rushes aid to animals in Lebanon
Read moreHow to make tax-deductible donations in Australia
Did you know that your donation could be tax-deductible? When you make a gift to IFAW and help animals and communities in need around the world, your donation could actually reduce your tax bill. Read on to learn how.
Each time you make a gift to a charity like IFAW, you could contribute towards saving a life. Whether it’s protecting important koala habitats in Australia, rescuing animals from disasters and conflicts around the world, or supporting rangers who risk their lives to save wildlife from poachers in Africa, your generous gift will undoubtedly have a significant impact.
The Australian government supports charitable giving by offering a tax deduction for donations of $2 or more. That means your donations can reduce the amount of income tax you have to pay when you file your tax return. Donations must be made to an organisation that has been endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) as a deductible gift recipient (DGR). IFAW is a registered charity and has DGR status, so your donation to us will be tax deductible.
You can use the charity tax calculator on the ATO website or below to calculate the tax deduction you could receive by donating to IFAW.
Disclaimer: You may be eligible for a tax deduction at tax time for your charitable donation over $2. These figures are based on current ATO resident individual income tax rates and do not include the Medicare Levy of 2%. The amounts shown in the charity tax benefit calculator above are a guide only. IFAW does not provide legal or tax advice. You should always consider your personal circumstances and, if necessary, seek independent financial advice before donating.
Making and claiming a tax-deductible donation is a relatively straightforward process. If you need help, you can seek advice from a professional, such as your tax agent. Here is how the deduction process works:
It is best to choose a charity that aligns with your values or a particular cause you support.
You can only claim reductions from donations to a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) charity, so be sure to check the DGR status of your chosen charity. You can check this by using the Australian Business Register.
There are many ways you can make a donation to your chosen charity. For example, at IFAW, you can donate online on our website, via a social media advert, over the phone, or you can email us and request that a member of the team reach out to help. You can find our contact details here.
Ensure that you either receive or request a receipt for donations over $2. This will make claiming your deduction much easier and will act as proof that can lower your taxable income. At IFAW, you will receive a receipt via email or in the mail after you have donated. You will also receive a special tax receipt before the end of July, showing all of your donations made throughout the financial year.
When tax time arrives, gather your receipts and claim your donation when you file your next tax return from 1 July. If you use a registered tax agent for processing your tax return, ensure you give them all your receipts.
Many types of donations are tax-deductible, including:
There is no real limit to how much you can claim on tax in general. However, gifts and donations cannot create tax loss, so if you’re claiming a large donation that reduces your taxable income to zero, your claim will be spread across a few financial years.
The value of your tax deduction depends on the amount you earn and the rate of tax you pay. You can use the tax calculator above or find more information on the ATO website.
IFAW will gratefully receive the full amount of your gift to help animals and communities in need around the world.
Donations up to $10 may not require a receipt. Larger gifts will require receipts, regardless of if they were cash, electronic payments, or other forms of debit. If you cannot find your IFAW donation receipts, please contact us and we will be able to send you a new one.
