A 7.4-magnitude earthquake jolted the sea area near Hualien in Taiwan on Wednesday, 3 April. This was the strongest earthquake to hit the island in 25 years since a deadly earthquake struck on 21 September 1999. The recent quake triggered more than 300 aftershocks at intervals of less than 10 minutes.
Disaster relief work is underway. At least 10 people are dead and more than 1,000 injured, according to a local emergency operations center. Nearly 1,000 have been evacuated and more than 600 people have been sheltered. The water supply has been cut off from nearly 4,000 households.
