April 16, 2021
Ongoing volcanic eruptions on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent have forced more than 16,000 residents to flee, and left thousands of animals thirsty, hungry and injured. The La Soufrière volcano continues to erupt and impact islands throughout the region, causing earthquakes, power outages and disruption of water supplies. Wildlife has suffered from loss of habitat as the explosions release ash and toxic gas.
Our Disaster Response & Risk Reduction team immediately reached out to St. Vincent and the Grenadines authorities to offer guidance in support of emergency management and animal rescue. We are also sourcing supplies to include food and fresh water for the island's pets, livestock and wildlife.
Stay tuned for more updates from this ongoing response.
