fun tips for keeping your cats entertained while indoors

• Try providing perches for cats so she can look out windows or ‘cat trees’ so she can climb and scratch

• Rotate different toys for your cat on a regular basis so they continue to be new and interesting for her. Mix them up and rotate those toys in and out of service!

• Try building a ‘catio’—a fully fenced in cat patio that allows your cat to be outside but in a safe enclosure.

• Place some ‘cat grass’ inside your home so she can enjoy some of the pleasures of being outside while still remaining safe.

•  Try food puzzles. Place small amounts of their dry food portion in a treat dispenser or put their wet food on plates arranged in a large circle for her to move around a bit more between bites.

• Actively play with your cat – heavy string or yarn with ‘breakaway targets’ on the ends are always fun! But, be sure to use only when supervised to keep her safe.

• Be inventive—cardboard boxes and empty toilet paper rolls can be turned into mysterious and inexpensive cat toys.

• Read to your cat—seriously! The sound of your voice while sitting still on a comfortable chair along with the vibrations in your chest as you read create a special bond between you!

• Try moving something around! Cats are naturally curious so you may want to try moving furniture around each week – just one chair or table or scratching box to pique their curiosity.

•  Now that you are home and working more on a computer, you may need some extra ‘help’ to find your cursor on the screen! Feed that curiosity by setting up a small monitor on the ground and playing one of the many incredible 'cat tv’ series where she can use her eyes, ears, vocal cords, and the occasional paw!

And remember:

• Observe and respect. Your cat has her own schedule during the day so she is probably wondering why you are around so much now! Observe her routine and complement it with enrichment when appropriate. 
• Respect your cat’s space. Note the best times to interact with her to ease you both into this new family routine.
•  Make sure to clean the litter box frequently. Cats that are used to going outdoors can be especially particular about a clean box so make sure you can keep them happy.
• Remember to be patient. This is a new routine for the both of you so just try to relax and enjoy it.
