Across Australia, koalas’ homes are under threat. But if we can find them, we can help them. And that’s exactly what we’re doing.
give to solveProblem
Development, land clearing, and deforestation were disrupting the lives of koalas and destroying their habitat. We needed to get a better sense of how bad things were. But we didn’t know exactly where the koalas were.
Solution
We partnered with the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland to research local koala populations. And then we brought in the dogs. A dog’s sense of smell is up to 10,000 times stronger than that of humans. We train formerly-sheltered, highly-active dogs—who may otherwise never be adopted—to sniff out koala scat and fur.
Take action
Major construction projects like housing developments and highways are destroying koala habitats and their migratory corridors right now. We can help stop these projects.
