Animal rescue team assesses animal needs in Nepal

The IFAW Animal Rescue Disaster Response Team arrived in Kathmandu, Nepal on Friday, May 1. From the air, the team could see the vast destruction on the outskirts of the popular tourist destination.

We were all thinking the same thing; we need to reach those areas.

We are working with local partners including the Kathmandu Animal Treatment Center (KAT), World Veterinary Services (WVS), Soi Dog Foundation and Dog Star Foundation to assess the well-being of animals in Kathmandu and the surrounding areas. We are finding many injuries – some that we can treat – some that unfortunately we cannot.

Families love their animals so much that they dug through rubble for hours to save as many as they could. They put the needs of their animals in front of theirs – giving them tarps as shelter and sleeping there with them to keep them safe.

Our team is staying strong amidst the devastation that we see day in and day out. The many emails, texts and messages that we receive from our supporters and colleagues give us the strength that we need to keep helping more animals. Special thanks to Greater Good and Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund for their incredible support of IFAW’s Disaster Response team.
