It’s been more than 40 years since a small group of concerned citizens banded together to stop Canada’s cruel commercial seal hunt. We’ve since grown into the most effective international organization specializing in saving animals in crisis around the world. Modern elephants are the last surviving members
of a once diverse and widely distributed group
of mammals known as proboscideans. Only
some three species remain, and they are either
threatened or endangered.
Our objectives, in preparing this booklet, were
to sort through the copious and often conflicting
and confusing information available on modern
elephants, present the facts as they are currently
known, and discuss some of the issues that
continue to hinder elephant conservation today.

The document submitted by Nigeria and Rwanda (CoP16 Doc. 53.3) contains two items for consideration by the Parties: a decision calling for the Standing Committee to request funding from UNEP to pay for translations costs associated with the implementation of the African Elephant Action Plan (AEAP) and a draft resolution urging Parties and stakeholders to contribute to the African Elephant Fund to adequately resource the successful accomplishment of the prioritized objectives of the AEAP.

IFAW fully supports the assertion in the proposal by Benin et al. that it is the fundamental responsibility of the Conference of the Parties to ensure that any eventual decision to allow ivory trade in the future in no way stimulates, encourages, causes or provokes elephant poaching or illegal ivory trade.
