Jeffrey Flocken, North American Regional Director, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), issued the following statement on the signing of legislation by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo which bans the sale and purchase of elephant ivory and rhino horns:

“New York is in the right state of mind with this ivory ban.

An African elephant is slaughtered on average every fifteen minutes to feed the troublingly large consumer demand for ivory. The U.S. is among the largest ivory consumers in the world and New York is one its biggest sales hubs.

Bidding Against Survival report

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW www.ifaw.org) today – World Elephant Day – published a new investigative report finding that the auction industry does not have the safeguards in place to protect elephants. Although many in the industry claim not to be part of the problem driving the elephant poaching crisis, investigators found almost no data that would support this assertion.

It is early August 2014, and so far this year not a single week has passed without law enforcers seizing a consignment of ivory “and those are the ones that are being reported,” says the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).

“Every seizure of ivory represents the slaughter of elephants wherever they live, but mostly in Africa, in countries where poverty and political insecurity make it possible for poachers and trafficking cartels to operate unhindered,” says Jason Bell, Director of the IFAW Elephant Programme.

Welt-Elefanten-Tag - dem Gedenken müssen Taten folgen

Tue, 08/12/2014

World Elephant Day – terugkijken en vooruitblikken

Renewing our commitment on World Elephant Day

Tue, 08/12/2014

At the current rate of elephant poaching in many parts of Africa, this crisis should be a matter of daily concern. World Elephant Day is a good time to reflect on some of the International Fund for Animal Welfare’s priorities to stop the slaughter and provide the space necessary for elephant populations to thrive.
