Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is currently on a three-day official visit to Kenya and it is expected that his Government will follow-up on the proposal made late last year when the Kenyan President visited Thailand.

“In January this year, the then Minister of Tourism & Wildlife Raphael Tuju stated that this matter will be considered in the best interest of the country.  The Kenya Government has kept this issue under wraps for a year now.

Welfare groups gear up for major legal challenge against Government

The legal appeal, by IFAW (the International Fund for Animal Welfare), RSPCA Australia and Humane Society International (HSI), will begin on Tuesday (11 October). It is expected to last less than two working weeks.

They are challenging a decision, made by the Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Senator Ian Campbell, to allow the import of eight Asian elephants to Taronga and Melbourne zoos.

It will begin at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in 55 Market Street, Sydney, at 10am.

Leading Animal Welfare Group Applauds “Common-Sense” Government Crocodile Decision

The Federal Government has upheld its long-held policy banning trophy hunting of Australian native animals for export.

Senator Campbell has today ruled (6 October) against a proposal by the Northern Territory Government to allow up to 25 crocodiles to be killed by commercial trophy hunters. Plans included the export of crocodile parts, such as heads and skins.

IFAW Asia Pacific Campaigner Rebecca Brand said: “Upholding the ban on the trophy hunting of crocodiles in the Northern Territory is a common-sense and very welcome decision.

Hurricane Dog Flies Cross-Country to Reunite With Family

Benetting is one of more than 5,000 companion animals affected by Hurricane Katrina, many of which are only now able to reunite with their owners who were displaced by the disaster. Pedro Garnica and his wife and son evacuated out of the hurricane zone with their dog to a shelter in Baton Rouge, but after two days there, Benetting was taken from them by local police, who cited the shelter's 'no dog' policy. "My wife and son cried so hard, and then I began to cry too," said Pedro Garnica of being separated from his dog.

69% of Canadian voters oppose commercial seal hunt

"When it comes to the commercial seal hunt, this poll shows that opposition literally starts on the doorsteps of Parliament Hill and extends across the country," said IFAW Canada’s Director, Olivier Bonnet.

Opposition to specific aspects of the seal hunt was even higher with some 77 per cent of voters, stating an opinion, calling for a ban on the killing of seals under three months of age and 78 per cent opposed to government subsidies for the hunt.

IFAW emergency experts carry out post-Tsunami training

IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) is sharing its wealth of experience over seven days in Sumatra and Borneo, as part of its post-Tsunami relief operation in Indonesia.

Training takes place in Bukittinggi, Sumatra, from 15-18 September and Pangkalan Bun, Kalimantan, from 20-22 September. Workshops will focus on being prepared for a wildlife disaster, emergency care and rehabilitation.
