Croatia joining EU is good for animals

Croatia today became the 28th member of the European Union in a move that bodes well for animals in Croatia and in the remaining 27 countries of the EU.

“Croatia has some excellent animal welfare legislation. IFAW looks forward to Croatia being a force on behalf of animals within the European Union,” said Sonja Van Tichelen, IFAW EU Regional Director. “Croatia introduced a ban on the import of seal products in 2006, four full years before the EU ban came into place.”

Animal Friends Croatia (AFC) was instrumental in the introduction of the ban on the importation of seal products in Croatia and other notable accomplishments such as a ban on fur farming.

“Joining the EU is a chance to improve animal welfare in Croatia and the other 27 EU member states,” said Anita Euschen, International Campaigns Coordinater for Animal Friends Croatia. “We encourage all 12 Croatian MEPs to join the Parliamentary Intergroup on Animal Welfare just as we encourage the other 27 member states to replicate Croatia’s ban on fur farming.”

“Now that Croatia is in the EU their ban on the importation of commercial seal products is also under threat from Canada and Norway at the WTO,” continued Van Tichelen. “We expect Croatia to be a strong voice in maintaining the EU seal ban regardless of the ruling handed down by the WTO.“
