IFAW (the International Fund for Animal Welfare) has welcomed a letter released today by 66 leading Australian and international marine mammal scientists calling on the Abbott Government to continue funding marine mammal research to ensure that Australia remains at the forefront of marine protection and conversation.

UK public urged to give up their ivory for destruction to help protect elephants from further slaughter

Members of the public are being urged to donate their unwanted ivory items to be crushed to raise awareness of the illegal ivory trade and help protect elephants.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) will stage the public destruction at a central London location to highlight the poaching crisis ahead of next month’s high level international summit on illegal wildlife trade to be held in the capital on February 13.

野生生物保護・管理法案2013が成立したばかりのケニアで、2日間に2つの別々の事件で中国人2人が象牙所持により逮捕されました。

2人が有罪となれば、新しい法律に基づき高額な罰金と厳しい実刑判決を受けることになります。

象牙所持に対する以前の罰金は最大30,000シリング(350米ドル)で、象牙の価値と比較すると決して抑止力となるようなものではありませんでした。新法案は絶滅危惧種への攻撃に対する刑罰を厳しくしました」と国際動物福祉基金(IFAW-www.ifaw.org)東アフリカ地域事務局のプログラム部長、スティーブ・ニュンビは言います。
