Bali dog Spirit fully recovered, awaiting adoption

Spirit then and now.The International Fund for Animal Welfare has worked in Bali for years, mostly with our partner, Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA).

Recently, a street dog named Spirit was rescued and rushed to their clinic.

She had mange and was starving. She was weak, and in a lot of pain. Veterinarians immediately began treating her.

In Bali's rural villages, many people don't have access to veterinary care or information about how to take care of animals. Often when a dog becomes sick, their guardians are afraid they will catch the disease — and the fear pushes them to abandon their dog at dumps or on the streets, swelling the homeless dog population.

That’s why IFAW began our Participation, Learning and Action (PLA) program in Bali four years ago. The PLA team delivers veterinary care and education for dog owners — and helps dogs like Spirit when they are in need.

I met Spirit when I was in Bali a few weeks ago.

She has made a miraculous recovery and is living a comfortable and well-loved life while she waits for her forever home.

She is looked after round-the-clock by BAWA staff members, spends lots of time being social with other dogs, and is extremely well cared for.

She is one of the lucky ones.
