Chinesische Regierung stoppt Tigerwein-Auktion

The Giant Manta Ray makes the list at the Convention on Migratory Species

The Convention on Migratory Species logo

The best outcome for me at this year’s meeting of the Convention for Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), held in Bergen, Norway, was the listing of the giant manta ray into Appendix 1 of the convention.

CMS is an international agreement to protect migrating animals that cross international boundaries. Protected animals are listed on either Appendix 1 or 2 of the convention. The CMS meets only every three years and at the recent meeting it was decided to give the giant manta ray, two raptors and two curlews the highest possible protection--inclusion in Appendix 1.

Japan journal: Where has all the whale meat gone?

Thu, 12/01/2011
The tuna auction at the famous Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo.

I recently returned from my first visit to the chaotic and beautiful country of Japan.

Along with Iceland and Norway, Japan is one of the last three countries still killing whales for commercial purposes, albeit under the guise of ‘scientific’ whaling.

Did President Obama just authorize the slaughter of horses in the US?

Fri, 12/02/2011

I loved and rode horses as child.  Chester, a spirited, chestnut horse, was my friend and partner on the trails surrounding Walden Pond in Massachusetts.  The two of us spent countless days together, enjoying our exercise and our friendship.  Horses in America are companion animals – friends like dogs, cats and other domestic pets.
