My mistake, I thought you were implying that this happens because people are trying to shut down the industry and the sealers starts ignoring rules.
I don't agree with the poster either about death to the sealers but I think it's our duty to stand up for creatures who cannot speak and when suffering is involved like it is here, something needs to be done to stop it. Your point that they need to put food on the table is noted, but it absolutely does not have to be done by cruelty. Kathy Kangas, a wealthy business woman, offered the Canadian Government $16 million to be given to sealers NOT to go sealing, it was turned down. This industry is subsidized by the Government where that money could, and should, be spent developing other areas for sealers to get into. This is a fairly small industry and only a small percentage of their income comes from sealing, what are they going to do when the European Union closes all it's member countries for seal products? And I am willing to bet that this will happen soon........following the individual countries that already closed their doors.
I gotta head out, we'll banter more tomorrow I'm sure...

I didn't say they recently started to ignore regulations. I said they didn't. For anybody knows they never really have followed rules to the letter.
I also wasn't arguing against compassion for animals. People screaming for the deaths of HUMAN BEINGS to save seals is quite a different matter. I have a problem with needless suffering as well... except, nature is all about suffering. Has been for millions of years, will be for millions of years. You can say we saved 250000 seals from being (for the most part) quickly killed.. but then what? The entire collection of non-vegetarian industries? Are you going to train a lion to eat soy? BILLIONS of instances of death and suffering occur every year, a small percentage is directly due to human activity. I say directly because the pollution of our enviroment is slowly taking a toll on the earth's ecosystems.
The main point I am trying to make is that for every seal or other animal humans save from pain (at a fellow human's expense, as hunters have to put food on the table too, and I've seen some of their communities, they're not exactly economically booming), many MANY more are suffering due to nature's way.

That's a bunch of BS Matt, the sealers didn't recently start to ignore regulations, that's always been going on. One of the reasons they have no interest in following the rules is because it takes them too long to do so, they're paid per pelt, not by the hour.
Being a compassionate person and not wanting animals to suffer doesn't mean you treat them above humans. Most people do have the ability to care for both animals and humans. You on the other hand, agree that the rules aren't followed and is most often overlooked so it appears that you have no problem with animals being made to suffer.

@Anti-humanists: Yes, I'm sure we can all agree that simultaneously hoping for the mass death of the hunters and the saving of the seals makes you all true human beings.
And I thought we evolved intelligently.
I don't think I'll ever understand how people can treat animals above fellow human beings... well, I guess you're just following in the footsteps of "visionaries" like Hitler and Stalin. Way to go! What's next, wanting to kill everybody who has a pet?
I agree that sealers do not completely follow regulations, and most of it is probably overlooked, but when you're trying to preserve a man's way of life, that happens. The government has a vested interest in preserving the livelihoods of its constituencies. It DOESN'T have an interest in giving IFAW more donation money.

This is one of the biggest problem with this "hunt". The sealers do not comply with the regulations and the DFO does absolutely nothing to enforce it.

After watching this slaughter I feel only sadness that the entire fleet has not sank but I will pray for that to happen. If they can do this to a animal, think what they want to do to you, and most likely will. Join me in boycotting Canadian products and traveling to Canada. The only way to stop this slaughter is to stop the $$$ to Canada.

That was the most gut wrenching thing I have ever seen in my life. These men and the people allowing this to continue year after year, do not deserve to live. Remember, what goes around comes around and in the next life the seals will be the hunters and they get the pleasure of pounding your brain in with a hook on a club and dragging your half dead carcus across the ice, no wait, just leaving you half alive so you can die a slow painful death, no wait they will just skin you while you are alive.
