Japan bows to pressure on humpback whales – but continues largest hunt since whaling ban

Humpback whales in the Southern Ocean are safe, at least for this Christmas. However nearly 1000 other whales are not so lucky. Earlier this week, the Government of Japan agreed to temporarily suspend their ‘scientific’ hunt for 50 endangered humpback whales in the Southern Ocean off Antarctica. Happy news for those 50 Humpbacks however, Japan’s plans remain unchanged to hunt 935 Minke, and 50 Fin whales this year, as they continue to escalate their illegal whaling activities.
