Nelson Mandela – 1918 - 2013 c. Trevor SamsonNelson Mandela, first president of a free and democratic South Africa, and the true embodiment of nobility, compassion, humility, strength, a brave heart, and above all goodness, has died aged 95.

IFAW joins millions around the world in giving thanks for his life, and sending condolences to his wife Graca Machel, former wife Winnie Madikizela Mandela, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other family members and friends, and the people of South Africa.

The following tributes were posted this morning by colleagues in IFAW’s Southern Africa office:

“A true revolutionary is someone who fights against oppression and for justice, against all odds, but who comes out the other side in humility and forgiveness and with a compassionate mission for his country and his people. There are few – Madiba was ONE. We thank you Madiba."
