Take action to protect whales

On Tuesday 1st December, Japan's whaling fleet departed for the Southern Ocean to resume so-called 'scientific whaling' in the Antarctic. This is despite the International Court of Justice striking down Japan’s previous 'scientific' whaling programme in March 2014.

Japan has designed a 'new' programme to resume killing whales in the name of science and plans to cruelly slaughter nearly 4,000 whales over the next 12 years in an expanded Antarctic killing zone.

Last month, Japan also moved to exempt itself from any future cases about scientific whaling at the International Court of Justice.

Write to Parliamentary Under Secretary of State James Duddridge MP and ask the Government to challenge Japan’s plan to resume whaling and lack of regard for international law.

Twenty-four baby elephants, some as young as two years old, were taken from their families for export into a life of captivity earlier this year.

Elephants have deep family bonds — this loss is devastating to the elephants left behind. And the captured young — stolen from their natural habitat and all they know — have a poor chance of survival.

Sadly, this practice is legal and it seems that the Zimbabwe government has every intention of continuing with the capture and export of even more young elephants.

Urge Zimbabwe's Ministers for Environment and Tourism to stop its policy of exporting baby elephants.

The UK has one of the world’s leading policing teams tackling wildlife crime; the National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU). Its funding is due to run out in March 2016. It is vital that the Government continues to fund the Unit so it can maintain its battle against wildlife crime. Please write to Rory Stewart MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Environment and Rural Affairs, and ask him to continue funding the National Wildlife Crime Unit.

Take action for seals

Year after year, tens of thousands of seals are killed during Canada's commercial seal hunt. The animals are skinned, and sometimes their flippers are cut off. Then their bodies are tossed away.

It's an unnecessary, horrifying waste of life.

Seal meat, while eaten in some parts of Canada, is not the focus of the commercial seal hunt. Almost all of the animals – 92 percent in 2013 – are dumped on the ice or tossed back into the ocean once their fur has been removed. Shockingly, this is completely legal.

Ask Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Hunter Tootoo to end the commercial seal hunt.

The Governor of the island of Bali ordered the mass killing of roaming dogs. Thousands of innocent dogs are killed every year, often suffering slow and painful deaths.

The Governor claims free-roaming dogs will lead to the spread of rabies. But human and animal health experts have proven that culling doesn't work to control rabies. In fact, it can result in the spread of the disease. Often, dogs that have already been vaccinated are among the victims of a mass killing.

Tell the governor to stop the mass killings.

A quick note to Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika will help protect dogs. We have prepared a template email for you to send. If you prefer, you can personalise this copy to make it more effective. Please ensure that you are polite at all times.
