Earlier this year the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Japan's so-called scientific whaling in the Antarctic was illegal. This landmark judgment meant that whales in the Southern Ocean were given protection from slaughter for the first time in more than a century. However, Japan plans to resume the killing at the end of next year.
Urge your government to ask the Prime Minister of Japan to respect the ICJ ruling and permanently end 'scientific whaling' (commercial whaling by another name) in the Antarctic.
We must ensure that the International Whaling Commission, which meets in September, takes a firm stance against Japan issuing any legal scientific whaling permits for whaling in the Antarctic or elsewhere. Instead, we encourage Japan to join the Australian-led multi-national approach to humanely study live whales in this area.
