Whaling Meeting Closes-Future Uncertain For Whales and Commission

Publication Date:

“The Commission is trying to chart a course for the future while ignoring ongoing whaling by just three member countries,” said Patrick Ramage, IFAW Global Whale Program Director. “Whale conservation measures were put on ice at this meeting.  If Japan, Norway and Iceland are serious about compromise, they should prove it by suspending their ongoing whaling.”

This week’s meeting focused mainly on the future of the commission, with only brief flashes of conflict between pro-whaling and conservation-minded countries.

Olympic travelers urged to Think Twice and avoid wildlife souvenirs

Publication Date:

IFAW staff visiting markets in Beijing have discovered many souvenirs made from rare wild animals, including ivory carvings, musical instruments covered in reptile skin and traditional Chinese medicines containing endangered species.  These were found in tourist and curio markets and IFAW is concerned that unwitting tourists may be buying these items as a memento of their holiday, unaware that this trade is pushing endangered animals to the brink of extinction.

African Elephant Coalition roots for conservation, not ivory trade

In  a communiqué read by Mali delegate, Alpha Maiga, the range states also opposed a recommendation by the CITES Secretariat designating China as an Ivory trade partner and resolved to make a formal communication before the CITES Standing Committee Meeting 57 scheduled set for July 2008 in Geneva.  Consideration for further trade and trading partners, they also resolved, should only be made after the one-off sale approved at CoP 14 has taken place and the effects of that sale are documented and understood.

IWC Voting Stops, But Whaling Continues

Publication Date:
din, 06/24/2008

“IWC countries are being pressured not to vote for conservation measures.   If Japan, Iceland and Norway are genuinely interested in compromise, they should immediately suspend their  whaling as a sign of good faith,” Ramage said.

The IWC has been deadlocked in recent years as the last three nations engaged in whaling for commercial purposes – Japan, Iceland and Norway – have fought to block conservation measures in the forum.
