Cynthia Moss maakt deel uit van het Global Elephant Team, voert actief campagne tegen de ivoorhandel en zet zich in voor de instandhouding en een effectievere bescherming van olifanten en hun leefgebieden. Omdat ze één van IFAW's olifantendeskundigen is, voorziet zij onze organisatie ook van cruciale wetenschappelijke informatie over deze diersoort.

Cynthia bestudeert al meer dan 40 jaar olifanten in Amboseli National Park. Dit werk heeft haar intussen diepgaand inzicht verschaft in een populatie Afrikaanse olifanten. In het kader van haar werk voor olifanten voert ze ook tellingen uit om de omvang van populaties olifanten in kaart te brengen in Kenia, Tanzania, de Democratische Republiek Congo en Botswana. Ook geeft ze onderricht aan wetenschappers, vanuit alle delen van Afrika, in technieken die bij het onderzoek naar olifanten kunnen worden toegepast.

Naast de talrijke boeken en wetenschappelijke artikelen die ze heeft geschreven, maakte Cynthia vier televisiedocumentaires voor de BBC. In die documentaires laat ze zien hoe ze één en dezelfde olifantenfamilie in Amboseli gedurende 19 jaar heeft gevolgd. In een andere BBC-documentaire, Africa's Forgotten Elephants, laat ze de kijker kennismaken met een van de meest in afzondering levende olifantenpopulaties van Afrika. Ook voor Animal Planet maakte ze een serie van 13 afleveringen over de olifanten van Ambroseli.

Cynthia geeft leiding aan haar eigen organisatie, de Amboseli Trust for Elephants (www.elephanttrust.org), die in zowel de Verenigde Staten als Kenia staat geregistreerd als een organisatie zonder winstoogmerk.
