Another chance for polar bears?

In 2010, at an international conservation convention in Doha, the nations of the world had the opportunity to put into place new protections for imperiled polar bears against unsustainable international trade.

However, with a final tally of 48 “for” to 62 “against,” the vote went against the polar bear.

Each year 55.000 people worldwide die because of rabies. More then half of the victims are less then 15 years old. This fatal disease threatens 3.3 billion people in Asia and Africa and in 99 per cent of cases it is contracted from dogs. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW – www.ifaw.org) and many other organizations and individuals are battling against this fatal, but preventable, disease.

In China, vaccinating dogs can save lives

In China, vaccinating dogs can save livesA few years ago, in the midst of a growing rabies epidemic in Bali, I received a phone call from our partner at the Bali Animal Welfare Association.

Our team was working in the tiny village of Kelusa, where a 9-year-old girl had been bitten by a suspect rabid dog, and the local clinic didn’t have the vaccines to save her life.

Elephants - too few or too many? Martin Meredith has a clear answer.

Elephants - too few or too many? Martin Meredith has a clear answer.I get involved in elephant discussions over and over again.

During all those discussions one party insists that there are too many elephants while the other party laments the grey giants’ extinction.
