Nominate an Animal Hero

Every year I look forward to our Animal Action Awards as it's IFAW’s chance to celebrate Britain’s unsung animal heroes. Last year IFAW was thrilled to be able to recognise the achievements of 11 award winners during the awards ceremony at the House of Lords, hosted by Baroness Gale and Queen legend and animal welfare campaigner Brian May.

Our 2011 winners included Rolf Harris in recognition of his life’s work with animals and his campaign against the Canadian commercial seal hunt.

We were also able to show our appreciation for some of our four-legged friends - Greyhound Danny who works as a listening dog, helping children improve their reading skills and Obi, a Metropolitan police dog who suffered a fractured skull whilst on duty during last summer’s London riots. Both honoured with awards and were in attendance at the House of Lords.

Other winners, whose truly inspirational stories of how they go above and beyond the call of duty for the animals, included Sue Gessey from Birmingham who was awarded for her use of alternative healing therapy to rehabilitate neglected and unwanted horses.

Jenny Clark from Sussex received an education award for running a bat hospital and teaching people of all ages about the need for bat conservation and exotic animal rescuer Pam Mansfield from Peterborough won our pet rescue award for her refuge for unwanted pets and zoo animals ranging from snakes to an alligator.

Awards were also given to Welsh badger protection group Badger Watch and Rescue Dyfed for its work rescuing injured and orphaned badgers and campaigning against badger baiting, and Scotland-based Juanita Wilson who was awarded for her tireless work providing sanctuary for hundreds of animals from ferrets to emus at her community farm.

The awards are our opportunity to honour the fantastic dedication, commitment and inspiration of Britain’s animal lovers as well as animals who are champions in their own right.

Now it’s time to start looking for this year’s winners and we need your help. If you know of a person or animal who you think could be an animal hero please send in a nomination now

We're looking for people who have done something outstanding for animals, maybe through establishing or running a sanctuary or rescue centre, campaigning for animals here or overseas, or perhaps a volunteer or fundraiser who would be suitable for our youth award. We’re also looking for our Animal of the Year 2012. Your nomination will give that person – or animal - a chance to be recognised for the amazing work that they do.

The 2012 Animal Action Awards will take place in October, so please ensure that you get your nomination in by June 30, 2012.

Please be sure to include:

  • your personal information and the information of the person you are nominating
  • a description of the work the nominee has done for animals
  • and why you think she/he is deserving of an Animal Action Award.

Help us find this year’s winners! Nominate your Animal Action Award hero today!
