I Love Nova Scotia Day has been declared for February 14, Valentines Day, and is being heralded by Premier Darrell Dexter as a day to celebrate everything that is wonderful about the province. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW www.ifaw.org) points out that I Love Nova Scotia Day is taking place at the same time that a slaughter of up to 60,000 grey seal pups could be authorized in the province and that it’s nothing to be proud of.

With wildlife being such an important part of what’s wonderful about Nova Scotia, IFAW is asking Premier Dexter to celebrate the province’s wild seal populations and protect them, rather than allowing them to be inhumanely hunted for their fur.

“The beauty of Nova Scotia’s wildlife is a huge reason why both tourists and residents love this province,” said Sheryl Fink, Director of IFAW’s Seal Program.“It’s a terrible shame that the Nova Scotia government isn’t extending the love to its seal population on I Love Nova Scotia Day.

“Nova Scotia is known and loved for its rocking music scene, delicious beer, and the Trailer Park Boys. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly known for its politically- driven extermination of grey seals,” said Fink.

IFAW maintains that the commercial exploitation of Nova Scotia’s wildlife is nothing to celebrate and that a federally-funded seal cull is not only an embarrassment for Canada, but also off-putting for tourists planning to visit Nova Scotia.

“All the tourists who love and admire Nova Scotia should know that the government allows defenseless seal pups to be herded, clubbed and skinned while still in their nurseries. It’s a blight on this otherwise wonderful province,” said Fink.

IFAW is asking its supporters to contact the Premier of Nova Scotia, Darrell Dexter, and the Minister of Tourism, Percy Paris, and ask them to share some love with Nova Scotia’s seals.

IFAW is also using Twitter and Facebook to encourage supporters to spread their message of love for seals this Valentine’s Day. Sheryl Fink, Director of IFAW’s seal program will also be spreading the love during the festivities at I Love Nova Scotia Day.
