Greetings from the North!
Sunday we made it to Vancouver and found it to be one of the most beautiful of all our stops so far. We were met with tremendous support and encouragement from the Vancouver community.
Over the course of the week leading up to our arrival, there were beautiful and inspiring photographs of whales displayed in an IFAW exhibit outside the Vancouver Art Museum. With the help of IFAW Canada and the art museum, thousands of people have stopped by to view the photographs and hear our message.
We actually held two events in Vancouver; a press conference at the airport on arrival and a terrific reception at the Vancouver Art Museum. At the art museum we were joined by 75 guests, including Olivier Bonnet, the Director of IFAW Canada and IFAW colleagues Barbara Cartwright, Erica Martin, Mary McDonough and Kim Elmslie. Henry, as poised and well-spoken as ever, delivered his speech to the entire group and was enthusiastically received.
We also added to our collection pieces of art from local children in Vancouver. We thank them so much for their support and the beautiful artwork. We will be presenting this and the other artwork to decision makers in Anchorage at next week's IWC meeting!
We woke up in Juneau Alaska this morning (Monday) and were very relieved to hear that the two wayward whales lost in the Sacramento River are headed back to the ocean. We know there were hundreds of spectators watching the whales and people across the country and all over the world are hoping for their safe return to open waters. In celebration, we actually did a bit of whale watching in Juneau this morning and saw three mother/calf pairs of beautiful humpback whales!!!!!!
As I write this we are back on board the whale plane slowly but steadily making our way toward our final destination -- Anchorage. The views of the Alaskan coast from the windows of our little plane are almost too beautiful to describe. We will stop in Homer, Alaska before heading to the AeroTech terminal at Merrill Field in Anchorage for a 10:30 a.m. arrival event Tuesday morning! If you are in the local area, come join us!
It has been such an amazing trip and we've experienced so much. Most importantly, the message of the whales has been spread far and wide across the North American continent.
Thank you so much for your faithful support along the way! Check back soon for more on Alaska and our big final day!
Patrick and Henry
