You seal hunting fools are just kidding yourselves! It is about bashing in the heads of animals too young to protect themselves with wooden sticks and bats for about $125 CDN per pelt. I personally would like to even up the odds and drop a couple hundred of the polar bears who are having a rough time with the melting of the Northern icecap into the mix. I think that would make it a more fair fight. None of the fishermen who are participating in the mass baby seal hunts are native peoples, they are blood-hungry, greedy European-Canadians.

According to the Canadian Citizen's Pamphlet, the northern territories are:The Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut. I think that Newfoundland and Larador are the Atlantic Provinces and that according to this pamphlet, the majority of Inuit people live in the Northwest Territories. So maybe I'm a hypocrite to some people, but at least I have SOME knowledge of geography. Considering some of the tunnel-visioned replies that have been posted, I feel it is not worth my time to respond anymore. It is very difficult to have balanced, intelligent conversations with people who just like to insult others with their rhetoric ( and cannot spell very well either!!).

The Aboriginal people of the Northern Territories ARE NOT involved in the NEWFOUNDLAND seal hunt.( The Northern Territories are WAY north of Newfoundland!) The sealers in Newfoundland are fishermen doing this hunt as an added income to their fishing income. The Inuit people and other groups who hunt seals, walruses, etc. are doing it for survival and use EVERY piece of the animal, unlike the Newfoundland sealers who skin the seals and throw the carcasses on the ice! Let's not mix the facts here and realize that the ongoing Canadian seal hunt in Newfoundland has NOTHING to do with the rights of native people who HAVE TO kill seals to survive!! There are two very different groups here.

Actually, there is a difference between animals raised as domestic animals and animals of the wild. Wild animals are NOT ours to slaughter, whereas domestic animals are raised for a REASON- to provide food for some people who choose to eat it( and I for one, am not a meat eater).Harp seals are NOT raised domestically to be slaughtered for their fur. They are wild animals. THAT is the difference.

There's a song in South Pacific that goes, "You've got to be taught to hate and fear, you've got to be carefully taught...". And this is true of the sealers. Most sealers admit that they were forced to do this around age 12 as a rite of a passage while their elders looked on and laughed. And that they felt sick to their stomach and cried. But over the years the empathy inborn in every human has died. The angry snarling face of a a sealer with the club we see on a video is the face of one who is so full of self-hatred and justification that he has to bash and murder. There needs to be a huge effort to change this thinking from a very early age. Sealer do the dirty work -and most of the one half of one percent of the 70B dollar fish industry which is all there is for this killing - get $50 US or less per seal. There are 6,000 inhuman people doing this, so that 's about $1500 per. The real corruption and money goes to the plants processing and the creeps selling to Norway, China, and and Russia. Meanwhile , the real money for bread, butter etc. comes from the 70B in fishing lobster, scallops, etc. Many Canadians are making huge monies going on and off to Calgary where oil fields and other minerals are a booming business. The world suffers, the animals suffer and the sealers will be haunted in their final days with their lack of connection and love for the planet and their fellow creatures. Humans have a duty to care for and protect our fellow creatures. It's a lonely planet when 90% of all ocean species will have disappeared due to humans collosal selfishness, greed, and lack of feeling for being a part of this still, could continue, wonderful earth. I believe if the Prime Minster's and other corrupt politicans' children and grandchildren, sealers toddlers, and children were brough along with their parent son the same boats and forced to watch what is truly happening - that we would get a true picture. There's no way these men would not acknowledge the shame and horror of what they deep down now. The head of the Sealers Association said he still feels sad to see the animals die. Canadians wake up! Force your legislators to vote in a Marine Mammal Protection Act and deem these seals an endangered species. If I were a Canadian, issues such as these would be the pivotal reason for choice. Where are the John Diefenbakers of the Canadian politcal landscape? If most Canadians do not condone this, where are the laws? Vote! Do something. Meanwhile, the EU is sure to ban all seal products, the US continues to boycott Canadian fish products with $350Million down in Snowcrab sales alone over the last few years. Canadian Tourism is under pressure, as well. There are generations of seals lost now since 1995 and I wonder if Canada would wait for complete extinction? The rest of the world will not allow this. Canada does not own wildlife! The numbers of lost seals who would just now at ages 5 and 6 years be ready to reproduce is mind-bongling and tragic. Every living creature deserves a right to live its life. Settlers to Newfoundland do not have a stellar record as they killed of indiginous people and numerous other animals and birds were hunted to extinction. By the way, native peoples are not involved in this Atlantic hunt at all. It is totally done by white men. I am embarrassed that my entire family is of Canadian origin at this juncture in time!

I jus´t can´t understand how Canada can be called a civilized country. They have no right to do this hunt...I wonder what would happen if a human being is kill in this way...it would be interesting to see the face of the people that allow this killing if anyone would come over, beat there children to death and skin themm even if they are not deaht...is this cruel?...well is the same pain to seals and baby seals...STOP THIS HUNT!!!!!

I just cannot believe how a so called civilised country like Canada can allow such cruelty to continue despite over whelming evidence that it is human's greed that is depleting fish stocks and not the marine mamals that survive solely on what they catch. I also can not believe that some so called humans believe that the seal fur looks better on them than on the animal it was meant for

Well if all the sealers are crying cos if the seal hunt is banned they will all starve, then go see the government. They got you into this mess let them get you out of it. There are plenty of other jobs out there that need doing i am sure. I cannot belive this is the only way anyone can earn money out in Newfoundland. So stop complaining about having no life if you dont kell seals. Maybe i could come over and skin your children and see how you would like that.
