Canadian Immigration Taxes Us at the Border

Ed_nova Hey, J.C. Bouvier here with an update on our arrival into our base camp in P.E.I. Canada. So, on our way into Halifax, Ed Butler and I were warmly welcomed by the customs officals who kindly asked us to stop by immigration on our way through.

The young lady behind the desk asked both Ed and I what it was exactly we were to be doing during our stay...to which Ed and I replied honestly...we would be gathering video and audio for this blog among other things.  This declaration caused the young immigration person to review some Canadian law, codes and other miscellaneous facts and figures...at the end of the 35 minute exchange...we were told that we would need work permits:  Cost $150 Canadian dollars each.   D'oh!

Jc_permit The photo you see of Ed shows his glee upon receiving the news...added benefit...due to the missed flight we were able to take in a bit of the local food, beverage and entertainment...including 3 holes of Golden Tee 2004...

Where does such hatred come from, you ask? From the loss of their liveblood cod to big foreign trawlers. From being stuck in a harsh place and screwed over by national leaders for 500 years. From the hatred aimed at them by people who know none of this.
I don't like to think about sealing. I'm not glad it exitsts. But I've known sealers who have hearts and souls--and pride that doesn't yeild well to antagonism. And I will never call them inhuman. I don't expect to influence your opinions, but I will state mine.

I was reading an article in a magazine and found out one of the main uses for seal skin in Europe. The skins are used to make the pouches that men wear on the outside of their kilts. They used to be made from otter skin, but that is now illegal. I can't remember the technical name for these pouches, but it might be worth looking into how many companies are making these pouches and how many use seal skin.

Thanks to IFAW and staff who are in this for the long haul. Why do some human beings fail to empathize, grasp with the reality that we are all part of this universe. That all creatures have a right to live their life to the fullest and that we owe them the support, love, and protection they need whether theyr'e seals, primates, birds -- we are in this together. I see intense hatred on the snarling face of a guy in one of the videos as he smashes down a small pup. Where does this hatred come from? Why the need to kill? These guys do the dirty work for $50 US - the entire slaughter reaps 0.57 percent of the 70 Billion dollar Canadian seafood industry. It can't be about money - something else drives this sickness of killing. **Hey, JC, it's Diane from Media 100 days. Great to see what you're doing.
