Seal my vote this election day

Make the seal hunt an issue in the Canadian by-elections

The seal hunt should be a federal election issue.  It is an issue that affects all Canadians – both our wallets and our reputations – and politicians need to hear that voters are concerned and want the commercial seal hunt to end.

On November 26, federal by-elections are being held in Victoria, British Columbia, Calgary Centre, Alberta, and Durham, Ontario. These by-elections give Canadians a chance to elect an MP that can make a difference for seals.

The commercial seal hunt is cruel and unnecessary, and it’s dying. International opposition to the seal hunt is growing -- 33 countries now ban the trade in seal products – and only a few hundred sealers actively participate in the hunt and it is of little economic value. Polls show that the majority of Canadians oppose their taxes being used to support the commercial seal hunt, and yet the Canadian government continues to use taxpayer money to subsidize and promote the slaughter of seal pups in the belief that it will win votes.

We are asking voters in the upcoming by-elections to raise the cruel and unnecessary seal hunt as an issue. Ask the candidates where they stand, and let them know that you want to vote in an MP that will end the commercial seal hunt.

If you get a response from your candidate please send us their reply at info-ca@ifaw.org. We would be happy to assist you in corresponding with your candidate, should they require further information about Canada’s commercial seal hunt.

Subject line: Seal my vote this election day

As a voter in your riding, and a proud Canadian, I want to make you aware of my opposition to Canada’s commercial seal hunt and the use of my taxes to support it.

There is now overwhelming evidence that commercial sealing is not only inherently inhumane, but economically unviable.  Sealing provides very little income to fishermen.  Only about 700 sealers took part in the 2012 seal hunt, and earned a mere $21 per seal slaughtered.  All of the major markets for seal products are closed, and propping up an industry that costs taxpayers more to support than it brings in does not make economic sense.

Commercial sealing is cruel and inhumane. There is no scientific evidence that killing seals will help groundfish stock recovery, and climate change is affecting the ice which seals require to reproduce, and hundreds of thousands of harp seal pups die each year as a result.

I belong to the majority of Canadians who are opposed to the commercial seal hunt, and I do not want my taxes wasted on propping up this dying industry. Along with the majority of Canadians, I want my tax dollars to be used to bring about an end to the seal hunt and compensate sealers.

It’s time for this cruel industry to end. I would like to know your position on this issue so that I can be well informed when I cast my vote in the federal election. I look forward to hearing from you.
