Prevent a massive cull of grey seals

The Canadian Senate has recently recommended a massive cull of grey seals, ignoring the warnings of independent marine scientists.

Please let Canada’s Minister of Fisheries and Oceans know that blaming seals is not the solution to the serious problems facing fisheries, and urge her to reject any calls for a grey seal cull.

Dear Minister Ashfield,

The Canadian Senate has recommended a mass cull of grey seals in Atlantic Canada, ignoring warnings from independent marine scientists and using seals as a scapegoat for larger issues facing the fishery.  I am opposed to this risky proposition and am writing to urge you to reject any calls for a cull.

Seals and fish have co-existed for millennia, and there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that culling seals will help fish stocks. Ocean ecosystems are highly complex, and the mass removal of one species is unlikely to benefit another. In fact, most examples of seal culls around the world have been found to have either unknown or no effects on fish stocks.
 
The massive cull of grey seals recommended by the Canadian Senate will deflect attention from the serious problems with fisheries mismanagement, overfishing and bycatch, but it won’t solve them. In fact, scientists warn that a cull may further disrupt the marine ecosystem with unintended and unexpected consequences.

Culling grey seals is an unethical and risky gamble with Canada’s fragile marine ecosystems. I urge you not to blame seals for the problems with our fisheries, separate politics from science and reject any calls for a grey seal cull.
