National Whale Day 2013 - Saturday 01 June
IFAW's sixth National Whale Day will be held around Australia on Saturday, 1st June 2013.
What is National Whale Day?
Launched in 2008 by IFAW, National Whale Day is a celebration of the whales and dolphins that migrate to our coastlines annually and Australia's position as a world leader in whale conservation.
National Whale Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of, and discuss solutions to, the threats facing whales and their environment including commercial whaling, climate change, vessel strikes, noise pollution, marine debris and bycatch.
National Whale Day 02 June 2012
National Whale Day 2012 saw over 80 events take place around the country. From the Gold Coast to Rottnest Island to Jervis Bay and Victor Harbour, communities and councils showed their love of whales and our oceans through holding events such as paddle outs, whale watch trips, talks, exhibitions, underwater and beach cleanups and performances.
The theme for National Whale Day 2012 was “Watch Out, Whales About”, which launched a new community awareness raising campaign designed to keep whales – and people! - safe on the water.
“Watch Out, Whales About” reminded people to keep watch for whales and dolphins, keep their distance, and keep speed and noise down to avoid disturbing these magnificent animals that come to our shores every year.
All National Whale Day communities were provided with educational information to share, as well as merchandise to support their event. Several events held fundraisers.
