Adopt a Whale
IFAW’s Humpback Icon Project (HIP) is giving your community the opportunity to adopt a humpback whale. From Rottnest Island in Western Australia to Hervey Bay in Queensland, Australian communities and councils can adopt a unique whale to be their local whale icon.
Every humpback whale has an individually patterned fluke, which, like a human thumb print, allows for them to be recognized and tracked.
Adopting communities will receive a photograph of their whale’s fluke from research databases on either side of the country, as well as a certificate of adoption. They will also receive HIP sighting updates in the bi-annual newsletter, sent automatically when adopting a whale. No cost is involved.
Celebrate the annual whale migration by having your community adopt a whale of its own.
