In an ironic coming of spring, Canada sets seal quota at 400,000 pups

Markets for seal products are disappearing, and seals need protection from threats like climate change more than ever, but Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans is ignoring its own scientific advice and setting the kill quota for harp seals at 400,000.

Unbelievable!

We need to keep the pressure on to end this slaughter, and IFAW will be at the seal hunt again this year to bear witness and expose the cruelty.

Please join us - watch, share, take action.

Thank you, Sheryl, for all that you do. I am a Canadian and an activist and my friends and I have spent many cold hours protesting the seal slaughter and many hours in general signing, emailing and leafletting. It is such a horrific and frustrating problem. I believe that Prime Minister Harper has some people working for him who understand how to garner votes from his bizarre collection of supporters. It seems to be all about mindset and not about jobs, the environment, animal rights. The driving motivation is expanding the oil sands and turning Canada into an 'energy super-power'.
So while Harper molifies the Newfoundlanders by extending the seal slaughter; confounds public thinking by blurring the line between Inuit hunters and sadistic seal killers; appeases the First Nations people who are stewards of the land through which the pipelines must go; sells out to huge corporations with ridiculous tax breaks while Canadian jobs go south to the US, he has ONE thing in mind: BIG OIL. He has even learned scare mongering which thrills the folks glued to their american TV channels. It makes me sick to think we'll have to wait for 2015 and the next federal election to see some change!

This is a truly barbaric slaughter of these animals and is totally unnecessary. The Canadian attitude to animal life is very lacking and should be of great priority to rectify

Humans have got to stop thinking they're the only creatures with a right to a place on this beautiful planet. It is beautiful because we have seals - not because of thousands of their dead bodies.
Stop it NOW.

I don't how you watch something so horrific and depraved and not want to kill yourself. God Bless you for bearing witness to this disgusting event. I will never spend one dime of my money in Canada or buy anything from Canada.

Must this travesty continue indefinitely, until even members of Parliament have had their fill of the bloody masacre? When will they draw the line, when their children shame them into action?
