I Found A Way for my fellow runners to help animals, join our team!
I grew up in South Africa with a German mother. Germans are notoriously adventurous and very fond of any adventure that is far, far away from creature comforts, and my mother fits into that stereo type!
This meant my childhood holidays were spent being dragged through the African bush in search of the ‘big five’ (lions, African elephants, Cape buffalos, leopards and rhinos).
At the time I probably grumbled and moaned every time our family took off for a holiday. I remember, it was the lack of warm water and the monkeys stealing my food that caused me the most discomfort, but now I realise what a profound effect these trips had on my appreciation for nature and how they deepened my love of animals.
As I‘ve grown older, I have looked for ways to help the animals I love so much.
A couple of years ago, when I moved to Australia, I decided I wanted to volunteer and get involved with an animal welfare organisation.
Easy for some, but as a personal trainer in a world of health and fitness, I couldn’t figure out which of my skills could possibly assist animals. I don’t think many animals care that much about how much they can bench press!
But I Found A Way…
Last year I began to volunteer for the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) as an assistant to their communications department and just recently I found the perfect way to unite my two passions – animals and fitness; through coordinating their Sun-Herald City2Surf, Golden Charity runner programme.
We all watched in awe as Boston runners started their run, only to be overshadowed by tragic events. We then watched 32nd London marathon, and thought that it was about time the Sydney office took up the challenge.
So, for the first time, IFAW has partnered with City2Surf and is offering a limited number of Gold Charity entry positions available to supporters who commit to raising at least $1,000 for our cause. We’d love you, a family member, or a friend to join our team.
I’ll be on hand to help you every step of the way.
As IFAW’s personal trainer, I’ll be sending out weekly emails to all our runners with tips for training, recovery, nutrition and injury prevention.
I will also be on hand for any questions the runners may have while training up for the race and will be offering two personal training sessions pre-race.
I look forward to working with the team!
I have now found a way to use my skills to help animals through helping like-minded people run and raise much needed funds.
If your skill is running then why not join the City2Surf team and help IFAW raise money to do what they do best!
