The Iceland Government has set up a committee to consider all aspects of whales and whaling in Iceland. They are set to review the impact of whaling on Iceland’s international reputation, as well as the possibility of a whale sanctuary. Please let them know that you support an official end to Iceland whaling and the establishment of a whale sanctuary in Iceland waters.

Dear Mr. Sigfússon,

I believe that you have set up a committee to consider all aspects of whales and whaling in Iceland and that one of the areas the committee will consider is the impact of whaling on Iceland's international image.

I believe that Iceland is a wonderful place but its great environmental reputation is seriously compromised by the fact that the killing of whales is allowed to continue. I am opposed to commercial whaling because it is cruel - as confirmed by scientific research which has shown that there is no way to kill whales humanely at sea.

I understand that the committee will also consider a recommendation that Faxafloi should become a whale sanctuary. I firmly believe that if this were to be done, Iceland could undo the damage to its reputation. I see that the only fin whaler in Iceland has not killed any whales for two years; if he decides to keep his boats in harbour permanently, I seriously believe that Iceland would be able to hold its head high once more in the knowledge that it could publicly be seen to be protecting whales and not cruelly killing them.
