This National Whale Day IFAW is launching 100 days of action and we need your help to demand silence from Australia’s politicians! Man-made ocean noise is increasing around Australia’s coast. We need a long-term and coherent strategy to deal with this invisible threat. Tell the politicians to keep it down; whales need peace from their noisy human neighbours!

Dear Minister Burke, Mr. Hunt and Senator Siewert,

I am supporting the International Fund for Animal Welfare’s call for a coherent plan of action to deal with noise pollution in Australia’s oceans.

IFAW’s National Whale Day celebrates the unique relationship Australians have with whales. We should be using occasions like this to focus on finding a way to ensure individual whales and entire species are protected from emerging threats, such as ocean noise pollution. For those populations that are not recovering from the heavy toll of whaling in the past, the need for action is all the more urgent.

Just because we cannot see noise pollution doesn’t mean it’s not a danger. Whales rely almost completely on sound to communicate, navigate, find food, attract mates, detect predators and interact socially, so noise pollution threatens every aspect of the way they live their lives. Underwater noise from human activities is increasing around the country, yet government and industry action is failing to keep pace with our knowledge of the risks noise pollution poses to whales.

Solutions are available and experience around the world has shown that we can deal with ocean noise in the marine environment, just like we deal with other pollutants. There are plenty of examples: embracing new technologies in seismic surveying, construction and ship design, or imposing noise limits and keeping the noisiest activities out of important whale habitats by ruling out oil and gas exploration or re-routing shipping lanes. We need to follow these examples here in Australia, and government needs to incentivise industries to reduce their noise.

Together, let’s find a way to prevent the problem of ocean noise pollution becoming even more serious by taking action now, not waiting until the problem gets worse.
