Spotlight Canada: Northern dogs "Emmy" is a big producer

Mama and pups.Emmy is what we call a big producer. 

In her short life, she had added more than her share of pups to the local dog population.  Coming into heat twice each year, she had not just had multiple litters, she had had big ones --  9 to 13 puppies in each. 

In total, Emmy had produced close to 50 puppies and no one can refute that that equals…. a big producer.

Tough weather kept the team onshore for a bit.Because of the unfavorable weather last time, we had only one survey-opportunity and only for a half of the day.

But, like you will find out further, this time gave us much more, then we could only imagine.

The good and the bad of internationalism

I am a big fan of internationalism and watching the recent opening ceremony of the London 2012 Summer Olympics reminded me why. What an uplifting experience to see nations of varied culture, language and religion come together through a common goal. I spent a large part of my life living in London and watching the parade, I felt proud, but not just as an ex-Londoner, as  a citizen of the world too!

Bill Maher wrote to the interim leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, Bob Rae, in early July and the two have been having a debate of sorts that’s being played out in Huffington Post Canada. Maher wrote to Rae about Canada’s commercial seal hunt, expecting the Liberals to do better than the Conservatives in their blind support of the industry.

Chimp takes to the street for round two

CJ the chimpanzee is back for round two.  Last Saturday, CJ was found wandering through a Las Vegas neighborhood.  This is the second time in a month the chimpanzee has successfully escaped her backyard enclosure to roam at large.

It's official in the UAE: no more wild animal imports

The United Arab of Emirates’s Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW) has announced a new regulation on importing wild animals.

What it means is that no more permits will be issued for personal or commercial use. The new procedure excludes wildlife breeding centres, universities, zoos and government agencies.

“The procedure existing ensures public health and safety and protects people and animals from communicable diseases or epidemics threats.’’ said Saif Al-Shara, Assistant Undersecretary for Livestock and Agriculture Affairs at the MoEW,
