Scientists look off SC coast for whale hit by boat

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (AP) - Scientists have taken to the air off the coast of South Carolina to look for a 40-foot whale struck by a boat off Hilton Head Island.

Officials say the whale is believed to be an adult North Atlantic right whale.

Barb Zoodsma of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says only about 325 adult right whales are currently alive. NOAA tracks the whales as they move to the Southeast coast to have babies in the winter.

Zoodsma says this was the first reported collision with a boat during the calving season which runs from November to April.

Scientists track the whales by airplane and will continue to look for the injured animal.
