Jimmiel Mandima

Deputy Vice President of Conservation

Jimmiel Mandima joins IFAW as Deputy Vice President of Conservation, playing a critical role in moving IFAW's core pillars of animal rescue and conservation forward.

Mandima has worked in conservation for more than 25 years, the majority of which were in southern Africa where he played different research and program leadership roles in the Zambezi Valley with the University of Zimbabwe and African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) respectively. In parallel, he served as Vice President for Environmental Education for the then Wildlife Society of Zimbabwe (now Wildlife Environment Zimbabwe) and championed the establishment of a nationwide schools-based environmental education program.

Mandima is key strategic contributor among national, regional and international think tanks on the discourse of wildlife conservation and integrated landscape, ecosystem level approaches. He has extensive multi-year experience in Community-Based Natural Resources Management, aquaculture development, inland fisheries management, integrated water resources management, and the ecology of large lakes in the tropics - all which informs strategy grounded in the rich indigenous knowledge of African culture and livelihood necessary in the context of conservation.

For the last seven years, Mandima served as the point person for AWF with all branches of the US Government, the World Bank Group, the Global Environment Facility, UN agencies and African diplomats in Washington DC, while also providing program design for AWF’s Africa-wide program. He was responsible for all US government-funded programs with USAID, INL and USFWS, including overseeing the signature Central Africa Regional Program for the Environment (CARPE) and other initiatives.
