Vice President, Brand Marketing & Communications

In partnership with the CEO and senior leadership team, the Vice President, Brand Marketing & Communications is responsible for setting a branding vision. As a key member of the Executive Leadership team, the Vice President will develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for integrated communications and marketing programming that supports IFAW priorities. On a regular basis, the Vice President will proactively define, enhance and extend the IFAW brand, overseeing message development as well as market research to help shape relevant and compelling messages.

  • Develop and maintain an understanding of IFAW’s programmatic campaigns and priorities to effectively promote the organization. Work closely with appropriate programmatic and regional office staff to advance IFAW’s institutional plan.
  • Set communications strategy and manage execution across owned, earned and paid media channels including OOH, strategic marketing partners and media/content partnerships.
  • Provide editorial insight for communications and digital marketing staff, ensuring consistent, compelling and coordinated messaging across all global channels including fundraising, marketing and communications.
  • Design and own the content operations for the marketing function, ensuring that the brand communications and marketing team can deliver on a variety of content requirements.
  • Provide brand guidance for the organization and ensure brand integrity and consistency.
  • Provide inspiration on a visual level; refine designs; lend a critical eye to all creative, structural and technical output.
  • Lead a cross-discipline and cross-office team by establishing common ground and aligning on shared vision to do inspiring work. Hire, mentor, motivate, coach, and provide feedback and accountability.
  • Develop annual budgets and income projections. Routinely review the digital team’s revenue and expenses, profitability/ROI, and progress to the CEO, executive leadership team and board of directors – and, as appropriate, for broader distribution within the organization.
  • Ensure all IFAW staff understand the value of marketing and branding.
  • Travel as needed to support IFAW priorities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications or a related field is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in progressively responsible leadership positions in communications, marketing and/or development.
  • Experience within a global nonprofit organization in the fields of environmental conservation, education or culture – or another setting of similar complexity and global scope – strongly preferred.
  • Track record of innovation and successful change management with demonstrated ability to inspire, persuade and motivate audiences and stakeholders.
  • Deep understanding of operating at a global scale and working with constituents around the world.
  • Experience creating and managing a budget.
  • Ability to coach and manage a team of professionals in offices worldwide.
  • Familiarity with and understanding of evolving technologies that can streamline operational processes and further advance IFAW’s ability to reach new audiences and potential donors.
  • Strong track record of recruiting and developing exceptional people and fostering a transparent work environment where collegiality is a key to success.
  • Clear understanding of contemporary communications and digital best practices and ability to effectively integrate them into operations.
  • Breadth of skills required to devise macro-level strategies, inclusive of organizational branding, communications, marketing and development.
  • Demonstrated ability in planning and executing integrated, strategic communications and marketing in support of achieving programmatic, organizational, fundraising and event goals for a multi-location, global organization.
  • Experience identifying and coaching institutional leaders.
  • Nuanced, sophisticated understanding of how to effectively leverage various communication mediums and distribution channels for optimal exposure and impact.
  • Deep experience leveraging emerging trends and technology, crafting effective digital strategies, and architecting an engaging user experience online and on social media.
  • Skill at setting goals and measuring success, and agility in addressing alternate program directions to meet goals when necessary.
  • Experience in developing, implementing and monitoring strategic plans.
