How do you stop whale hunting? Just watch.

In Iceland, we introduced local leaders to whale watching as an alternative—and lucrative—industry to whale hunting. We were so successful there that we decided to try it out in Norway.

Problem

Despite an international moratorium on the practice since 1986, Norway is one of the last remaining countries to allow commercial whale hunting in its waters.

The government is so supportive of the industry that it recently increased whaling quotas by 28%.

Solution

We’re working with the Norwegian tourism industry to create a national whale watching association. As IFAW’s Sigursteinn Masson explains, “When you are in this business of selling whale watching trips…it is your ethical obligation to think of the welfare of the animals that you are benefitting from.”

150

dolphin and whale watching businesses are operating in Japan.
