WATCH: Mr. Seal Goes to Ottawa

At IFAW, much of our political advocacy work depends on caring, compassionate supporters who will speak out on behalf of the animals we work to protect.

It is so incredibly important every time someone takes the time to write a letter, send a postcard, or sign a petition calling for change. As individuals our voices often go unheard—but when we act together we become a powerful voice for animals.

IFAW has received letters and concerns about the commercial seal hunt from IFAW supporters all around the world, and last week our mascot Mr. Seal and our Wildlife Campaigns Director Sheryl Fink delivered nearly 4,000 of them to the Canadian government.

The postcards were graciously accepted by Member of Parliament and Leader of Canada’s Green Party Elizabeth May.  The Green Party of Canada is currently the only federal political party calling for an end to federal assistance to the commercial seal hunt, asking Ottawa to work with fishermen and their communities to develop a fair buyout of sealing licenses and to find sustainable economic alternatives to commercial sealing.

The commercial seal hunt is a dying industry.

The World Trade Organization recently upheld the EU ban on seal products, and world markets for dead seals are disappearing; so far in 2014, no exports of seal products from Canada have been reported. Rather than continuing to keep the seal hunt alive with ongoing grants and subsidies, it is time to support alternatives that are economically viable, sustainable, and humane.
