The first ever comprehensive scientific study to assess the population of harbour porpoises, the UK’s smallest cetacean, will begin in the Thames Estuary on Friday (6).

A research team on board the unique, non-invasive whale research vessel Song of the Whale will carry out the survey to find out more about where this shy species is located in the tidal Thames and examine the threats porpoises are facing from human activities, such as man-made underwater noise and litter pollution. These vital findings can inform efforts to conserve the species.
