On November 27, three young tigers appeared near a military unit located 8 km away from Yakovlevka village, Primorsky krai. The small predators tried to kill a domestic dog, but a guard scared the animals away into the forest. In another attempt the tiger cubs succeed in catching a hen.

A recent episode of Fox’s hit series BONES follows a farmer’s decision to purchase a tiger, which ultimately leads to the mauling and death of an innocent bystander. After the accident, the tiger is killed to prevent further human fatality and injury. This episode serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of private big cat ownership, both for the animal and owner. In this case it is fiction, but we know that far too often the reality is just as grim if not worse.

As you know, the tiger is in trouble. That is why we are here at the International Tiger Forum in St. Petersburg. There are less than 3,500 wild tigers left in the world and if we don't act now, the tiger is doomed. We are here at the summit to help build political will among tiger range states as well as to ensure that means are dedicated to capacity building.
