2012 SOTW Azores Research USA cruise report

The IFAW research vessel Song of the Whale (SOTW) left the Azores at the beginning of May bound for the north-east coast of the USA, travelling via Bermuda and arriving in Boston at the beginning of June. The aims of this research passage were to further examine baleen whale distribution and vocalizations during the Atlantic crossing and to explore beaked whale presence and distribution over oceanic seamounts and offshore abyssal waters. The Song of the Whale team conducted 20 days of research effort between 6th of May and 1st of June.

Official government of Japan statistics, Japanese press clippings, and public opinion polling in Japan show conclusively that the claim that Japanese commercial whaling is a cultural and nutritional necessity is a lie. Commercial whaling in Japan is an industry that is not profitable, that is able to exist only because of taxpayer subsidies, and that provides a product catering increasingly to a shrinking and ageing market.

This report summarises research activities carried out by the Song of the Whale (SOTW) team in Iceland in August and September 2012 and preliminary findings from the passage from Iceland to the UK in September 2012. The IFAW research vessel Song of the Whale and team worked around Iceland from the end of July through to September 2012, conducting whale research in collaboration with the University of Iceland.

The IFAW research vessel Song of the Whale (SOTW) left Boston bound for Iceland at the beginning of July. The route skirted the coast of Canada and then south of Greenland, and the team arrived in Iceland at the end of July 2012. There were two research aims during the passage. The first aim was to investigate the presence of blue whales in the Laurentian Channel, Canada. The second was to survey through the historical eastern North Atlantic whaling grounds for the presence of the North Atlantic right whale.
