Canada’s commercial seal hunt opens off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador today, despite a lack of demand for seal products and restrictions on seal products in 34 countries. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW www.ifaw.org) questions why the Canadian government insists on wasting millions of tax dollars supporting an industry that is clearly obsolete.

The first hearing on the EU’s controversial ban on seal products begins Monday in Geneva at the World Trade Organization (WTO). The three members of the WTO’s dispute settlement panel established for this case will hear arguments from Canada and Norway attacking the EU’s ban on the importation and sale of seal products while the EU will submit its initial defence of the ban.

The Canadian Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans today released a report recommending a mass cull of 70,000 grey seals in the Gulf of St Lawrence, a recommendation the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) calls an unethical and risky gamble that is not supported by science.
